A story of finding, acknowledging, and embracing oneself—fittingly subtitled My Journey Back to Self. This memoir by Ayanda MaNgubane Borotho resonated with me on so many levels. Let’s take a moment to peel back the layers together…

1. The Power of Personal Storytelling

This book belongs to my favorite genre, Auto/Biography. I have a deep appreciation for personal memoirs, and Unbecoming To Become is a beautifully articulated account of Sis Ayanda’s life and milestones. I found myself completely immersed in her journey, falling in love with the way she tells her story.

It’s truly a beautiful thing to reflect on your life and see how each experience has prepared you for the next!

2. Living and Learning Through Shared Experiences

One of the most impactful aspects of this book is how it allows us to live vicariously through the author’s experiences – learning valuable lessons along the way. I strongly believe that the best way to break generational ‘curses’ is through honest dialogue, and that’s exactly what this book offers.

3. Owning and Honoring One’s Story

The final layer of appreciation for me is Sis Ayanda’s confidence and pride in her journey. She fully owns every aspect of her story, sharing her lessons unapologetically and encouraging us to do the same. There’s something incredibly powerful about standing firm in your truth and using it to uplift others.

Without giving too much away, here are three thought-provoking quotes from Unbecoming To Become that deeply inspired me:

  • “How you relate to other women is a reflection of the relationship you have with yourself.”
  • “What is normal is what we have embraced.”
  • “The problem is we spend so much time serving the talent, thinking it is the gift.”

A huge congratulations to Sis Ayanda Borotho for this heartfelt and transformative memoir. May her journey continue to inspire and serve her 🙏🏾

If you enjoy learning through other people’s experiences, I highly recommend Unbecoming To Become: My Journey Back To Self.
