Lessons Learnt

I’m definitely the type to look for the lessons in all of life’s experiences. I’m also aware that I am not the only one who believes that everything happens for a reason, and that lot of the times the reason is to deliver a lesson that needs to be learned 🤓

I have compiled a list of the lessons I have gained. The teachers I have learned these from aren’t necessarily confined to the classroom, after all we’ve got lessons waiting to be learned all around us…

“Your life is the most important thing”
My Father

First on my list is a lesson I keep receiving from my beloved father 🌹 Whenever I let the “Time is ticking” stress get ahold of me, my father is always near and ready to kindly remind me to take it easy and even to have some time out. “Your livelihood is the most important thing, because without it you cannot do anything my child.”

This lesson is my favourite to have gained, and to keep learning, as it reminds me of what really matters – ME – that’s mind, body and soul

“The sole purpose of a business is to make money”
My Therapist

Well this point seems obvious to me now that I’m writing/reading it out loud, but I really was in the dark about this for quite some time. You see I also happen to love academia, and it’s that way because I want to make a valuable contribution to my field of study, and that was the sort of mentality I carried into business too 🙌🏾

“I started my company to make a valuable contribution to the fashion and lifestyle industries!” I proclaimed one afternoon, in response to my therapist’s question. To which he boldly replied: “Well that’s good and well, but unless you aim on making money you aren’t running a business!”  💔

I know right? It sounded very shallow and materialistic to me, but he has a point! Realising this truth took me on a journey of ‘business discovery’ – I continually asked myself: “How can I create a business that makes a contribution to my chosen industry and generates money so it is financially sustainable?” 🤔

“Confidence is learned”
My Supervisor

“You’re either born with it, or you don’t have it at all” – this is the attitude that is often painted about having confidence. It’s either you have it in you or not, right? WRONG 🙅🏾‍♀️

The first time I met my lecturer she was able to identify my lack of confidence and she reassured that by the end of my degree I will be: “a force to be reckoned with,” – and I quote.

“Keep on trying & know that failure means nothing”
Life

It’s so true: if at first you don’t succeed, try, try, and try again! I’ve heard this sentiment more times than I can remember and I get it more now than ever before 💯

Too many times I have allowed my fear of failure to stop me from living so many, and possibly, amazing moments. So life taught me to say YES to trying and a DOUBLE YES to failing and learning from it 👌🏾

“You can overcome life's pain”
My Mother

Awh diMamzo, there are so many great lessons I have learned from my late mother 🤍

One of the best ones would be this one, my mother let me know that we go through life’s worst moments in order to gain the strength to be able to conquer and dominate ✊🏾

“More information = empowerment”
Business

The truth is – the more you know the better. This is so because the knowledge you posses is your advantage over every obstacle you’ll ever be faced with 🔥

Education truly is the key to success, and knowledge is power 💪🏾

“Don't let boys control your emotions”
My Sister

This quite a deep lesson to learn from your baby sister right? 🤯

Yet my little sister has proven to be mentally much older than her age, and when we were watching something on T.V, the main girl was in a bad mood because her boyfriend had done something and that’s when she released these pearls of wisdom… 💎

“Don't put yourself down!”
My Business Mentor

The are quite a few lessons my mentor has taught me these past years, but one that has really stuck with me is this one ☝🏾

That is to pay special attention to how I present myself, be mindful of how I say what I want to say and never to put myself down! To always remain positive 🌈

Can you relate to the importance of learning these lessons? Which one of your own life’s lessons really got to you?

Yours – but mine first,
Aphsie

P.S.  Thanks for having a read & I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this topic below…

  1. Being aware of all the things we have learned so far (and what taught us these life lessons) is such an important way to keep track of our progress. Sometimes it feels like we’re stuck or things are not going well, when in reality, we are moving forward. Reading this was so interesting and encouraging!
